McDonald's has pulled a holiday advert created using AI following encountering significant criticism on social media.

The 45-second spot was produced via generative AI clips and was first published publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Response and Removal

Shortly after its release, commenters denounced the implementation of AI in the advert. Many described it as "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This experience serves as an important learning as we explore the appropriate use of AI," said a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was developed for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of things that can go wrong during the holidays, using the tagline "the most terrible time of the year".

The Trend of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that include generative AI have emerged as a rising trend among major companies, notably for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly launched back-to-back AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because videos created with current AI video tools are susceptible to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked worries about the replacement of human roles in the advertising sector, with some commenters noting it could reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Defense from the Creators

After the video's removal, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

She stated, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then edited afterward "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an AI trick," she said. "It was a proper commercial."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely panned, the reception for other AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-created holiday ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis garnered a significant "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.

However, other businesses have likewise received scrutiny for employing the technique in their campaigns. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some described as "lazy" and "disturbing".

The episode illustrates the ongoing debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the trade-off between technological innovation and audience reception.
