Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.
"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
